Fortunately, I was never exposed to this seemingly horrendous mashed concoction. I remember the classic manual typewriter with its bells. Thanks for bringing back fond memories.

Then there's the recipe of a pie made with lima beans, broccoli sugar, red pepper, onions, mushrooms and cat hair.

Only kidding. Your recipe sounds only a tad more tasty than this imaginary one that yes, I made up!

Cat hair, I find, lends a certain piquancy to any recipe and comes home-grown in my kitchen!

As always,Ann, the memoir was utterly engaging but I could barely read the recipe after the cups of confectioner sugar.... :-)

Yeah, I know. As said, I never want to make this again, but I threw it in because it's just such a peculiar local treat and one of those childhood foods you never forget.

My parents were both good cooks but we still had tater tots, fish sticks and pigs in a blanket mixed in with the homemade bread from my Dad and wonderful fresh vegetables from Mom's garden. Go figure. I will, alas, not be making this latest recipe...please continue the story, however...takes me back to those times!

Oh dear my teeth hurt from reading this receipe. But then my mom made sweet potatoes with canned pinapple and marshmellow topping- I can't imagine eating that either. I think even the sweet potatoes were from a can. So many canned fruits and veggies in my childhood.

Yes, a Bonnard. The artist and title are always at the bottom of the post, after the recipe.

I adore your recollections, but seriously wonder how we all survived what passed for nourishment in those years (thinking fudge and jello with baby marshmallows . . . anything with marshmallows.)

And don't forget Chef Boy-Ar-Dee, Wonder bread, Welch's grape jelly, TV dinners, and gallons of Coca Cola!
